A gathering place for moms in Upstate South Carolina
A few weeks ago, I noticed my 7yo son was having some urinary issues; dark urine to be specific. I first thought he must be a litle dehydrated so I did my best to increase his liquid intake. Despite that, there was still a problem and eventually I noticed a pinkish-red color. We immediately went to our family doctor who did blood work and a urine culture, which showed "a LOT of blood" according to the nurse. The blood work was all normal, so we spent another 2 weeks hydrating. Another culture on the 3rd of this month, still revealed blood. The next step was referral to a pediatric urologist. Our family doctor didn't think it was kidney related, but possibly ureter or urethra related. I wait a week to hear from the urologist, and finally call our family doctor back. She said it might take several days to hear from them. Okay, that's fine. We actually did hear the next day, but the appointment they gave us isn't until July 12th! I hate waiting like this since I'm so worried about what could be the cause of this. I've talked to a guy I'm friends with, and he said he had a very similar issue as a child. It was a normal variant and he was fine. Praying that it's nothing serious!

They told us the nurse would schedule the ultrasound and call, but I've heard nothing. I'll call them in the morning if I don't get a call by the end of the day today. We're supposed to see Dr. Norris again on the 28th.
I turned 40 in April after I had Jake in October. I'm not sure I'll ever get used to someonen asking if I'm the grandmother! LOL
Comment by Lacie Gilmore on July 13, 2011 at 1:54pm Oh, don't feel funny! Mom's come at many different ages, shapes, sizes, colors, etc... :) I'm 29 and sometimes feel a little funny about being such a young mom. Even though I was almost 22 and married when I had her, a lot of moms are waiting until they are older to start a family now so I definitly get feeling a little out of place. When they did the end of the year program, one of the moms came up to introduce herself and she thought my step mom was Millie's mom! :)
So did you guys go for the ultrasound yesterday? When do you get the results? That was what really helped with us. We were able to see just what we were dealing with in terms of Kids size and function.
Thanks, Lacie
I remember that!! Jake didn't say her name, but I remember him waving at someone. Bless her heart for having to have surgery. I'm so glad she's doing well! We saw Dr. Regina Norris in Greenville? Since it doesn't seem to be anything with the urinary tract, the next step is to check the kidneys for shape, size, function, I guess, with the ultrasound. It's so odd that he still has it and every test he's had has come back normal. I really feel like the ultrasound will be normal, too. I just hope that it does.
I'm so much older than most of the moms at AMES so I feel funny when I'm there for any kind of event. lol Poor Jake has the old mom!
Comment by Lacie Gilmore on July 13, 2011 at 12:42pm Hi Jan,
My daughter, Millie, just started at AMES in April when I got married and moved to that side of town (we live in Bradford West). I think she was in the same class as Jake. We actually saw him at Wal Greens a couple of days ago and Millie said hi to him. :)
Anyhow, what specialist is he seeing? We have had some problems ourselves but she is much better now. We were told there weren't any pediatric urologist in town so we were sent to Charlotte to see Dr. Luis Perez. He is awesome!!! So down to earth and such a nice guy! I wouldn't have chosen anyone else! Millie had Kidney Reflux. I found out it is pretty common and most children grow out of it. Millie, unfortuantly, did not, so she had to have surgery. She had two different surgeries and hasnt had any problems since her last surgery on Halloween day 2009. It doesn't sound like that is what is going on with Jake since you said they don't think it involves his kidneys, but, nonetheless, he is a great Dr. for anything urology related! Hope you guys figure it out soon, I know it is scary! We will say a prayer for him :)
